We were pondering what is the original “story” about black and white kittens and why because of superstition they are rarely chosen over their coloured counterparts.  We tumbled across this fascinating story – which is so uplifting and inspiring:

This cat wore a coat of black and white patches, like night and day stitched together. One side reminded people of darkness, the other of light. Its name was Patchlight.  Patchlight carried an important lesson. Whenever people argued that one thing was good and another was bad, Patchlight would curl up in a doorway and remind them that both sunlight and shadow belong to the same world.

The two cats traveled together. Moonshadow taught courage in darkness. Patchlight taught balance between opposites. Over time, villages that welcomed the cats flourished. Their crops survived harsh seasons because people learned not to fear every unknown thing. Their children grew wise because they learned to ask questions instead of believing rumours. Fear hated this. With every act of kindness from the cats, Fear became smaller. At last, Fear shrank to the size of a grain of dust and blew away on the wind. Yet the old whispers never vanished completely. Even today, some people still repeat them. That is why, according to the old tale, black cats and black-and-white cats sometimes pause and stare at us. They are checking whether we are listening to Fear—or whether we remember the lesson of Moonshadow and Patchlight.

For those who greet them kindly are said to receive three gifts:

  • The courage to face the unknown.
  • The wisdom to see beyond appearances.
  • And the luck that comes from understanding the truth.

That is why black cats are not omens of misfortune, and black-and-white cats are not signs of bad luck. They are the guardians of the ancient balance between night and day, reminding the world that fear is often the only thing truly worth fearing.
