Meet MUFFIN – a handsome full English Setter with fantastic looks and great joie de vivre.

Back in early March 2020, MUFFIN was found wandering alone near to a travellers’ encampment in a deplorable state: very thin, riddled with ticks, afraid of his own shadow and . . . not surprisingly, unchipped.   Such was his state that a refuge volunteer took pity on him and decided to take him home with her . . . and this is where his journey to happiness began.

He had obviously never been in a house before, did not understand the “rules”, and simply did not understand toys or how to play.  Even a treat offered by hand was seen as a threat.  With patience and loving care – and taking his lead from the other dogs of the household – MUFFIN gained in confidence.  He was clean in the home in no time at all, and despite being subjected to a very necessary and early bath (which he hated!), he proved himself to be very affectionate towards his humans and a fast learner.

As this arrangement was only temporary, and in order to avoid him having to go back to the refuge, we were asked to find him the stability that a foster home offers.  And he landed well and truly on his paws!

His character has continued to emerge.  He was readily accepted by the other male dogs in the household and began to understand what this ‘play’ business was all about.

MUFFIN is one of those dogs that is constantly happy, constantly amusing himself.  He loves nothing more than chasing insects and birds around the garden, leaping for joy despite his lack of success.  He then will break off that activity in order to play with his new-found friends.  Evenings are cuddle times.

From the beginning MUFFIN settled well overnight. He is not a ‘chewer’, so has not destroyed anything at all. He loves his food and is not over-protective of it, but he does like to take any special treats away to enjoy them in a quiet corner away from the others!  He is also one of those dogs that ensures you keep a tidy kitchen as unattended counter surfing is something of a speciality.

At his first vet check, he was declared fit as a fiddle with the exception of a small heart irregularity.  Once he had gained some weight this irregularity has disappeared, probably originally caused by malnourishment.  He is on no medication and is not lacking in energy.  He travels exceptionally well in a car, is great meeting other people,

His encounter with cats in his foster home has been interesting.  He has learnt that they can hiss and scratch so he treats them with the greatest respect and caution. He has made new doggy friends to play with and his foster mum is full of praise for the way he has adapted. In her words:

He is a loving boy who loves life, integrates well, and is no trouble at all.

What is MUFFIN looking for?  Ideally an active family with a large enclosed garden.  Lots of hedges keep him entertained for hours doing the typical setter thing of “looking for birds”.   A family used to setter ways would be ideal too – because to know them is really to love them.  Activities that include a dog would also be ideal – long walks,  countryside, mountains, seaside – all of those would allow MUFFIN to be in his element.

MUFFIN is currently fostered in Department 24 (Dordogne) and is available for adoption anywhere in France or farther afield, subject to a successful home check.  If you would like to know more about this friendly gentleman, and have the opportunity to meet him either virtually or in reality, you can:
