[socialicons]Please meet PHOEBUS, who came to us as a sadly neglected hunting dog.
Yes, he’s a “chasse dog” – one of the gorgeous breeds that get classified as “chasse”. He’s a Griffon Nivernais . . .
. . . not that you would have been able to recognise him as that when he first arrived (see photos pre makeover). PHOEBUS was an astonishing 10kg underweight — a dog who has probably spent his whole life working hard, only to be so woefully let down by the person who should have cared for him. Thankfully, he was taken in by the refuge with which we work who recognised that this gentle boy needed much more than they could provide and asked us to take him under our wing for some much needed TLC.
In the first instance PHOEBUS has been moved into a kennel environment where he has been assessed – medically by a vet, and by one of our volunteers in her home environment and out on walks, given care and attention, and even had a “makeover” making him into the handsome lad with the deepest pools for eye you could ever wish to meet. WE are so delighted that he is starting to look like a different dog. He has new coat coming through and is starting to gain weight.
Despite everything this boy has been through, PHOEBUS is incredibly loving. He just wants to be with people. He seeks affection and company, and seems genuinely grateful for every bit of kindness he receives.
Yes, he has strong hunting instincts — it’s in his breed and something that will need to be understood and worked WITH ( in the pet dog sense) rather than against. . But PHOEBUS is also bright, eager to please and willing to learn. He is definitely ready to move into a foster or adoptive home – definitely no cats ! – and continue his journey to wellness and to becoming the family dog and companion that we believe he can be.
His idea of paradise would be
- a country home,
- a safe garden,
- a dog or two as a friend but above all
- a human to call his own.
