Demi currently takes 10 tablets a day but, she can still have around 3 epileptic seizures a month and these normally occur around 3am, which means Kate occasionally misses out on some of her beauty sleep, bless her! Kate’s vet spoke to her about how ‘chunky’ Demi was, which led to a very frank conversation about body shaming and it was never mentioned again…….we are happy to say in the last 6 years, she’s lost 8 kgs. She is now a svelte 38 kgs, well you can’t rush these things!
Over the years, life with Demi hasn’t been without its challenges. Shortly after going to live with Kate, she went missing, there was a heartfelt plea on Facebook for her safe return, thankfully she eventually plodded home at her own sedate pace. A couple of years ago, Demi was having a normal day and all of a sudden just dropped to the floor, Kate checked she was breathing, covered her with a blanket and kept a very close eye on her. It wasn’t a seizure, so it was just a case of wait and see. She came around about an hour later then, she just got up and walked away. Kate suspected it was a little ‘event’ as she now has a slight droop on one side of her face, thankfully is hasn’t spoilt her gorgeous looks.
One afternoon earlier this year, Demi had an episode of cluster fits, that went on into the night. She couldn’t move her, she couldn’t stand or walk and her vision seemed to have been affected too, so Kate suspected that there was something seriously wrong. The vet came to see her the same day and gave Demi a thorough check over. He gave her a couple of injections and said they should wait a few days and just see how she gets on. A few hours later she tried to get up, Kate grabbed a large towel and hoisted her to her feet, she wobbled out to the garden, had a piddle, wobbled back in and crashed into a lovely slumber, snoring like a pneumatic drill! Over the next couple of days, her mobility and her vision improved but, her sight not fully!
Recently, she developed a lump in her abdomen. It grew very quickly so, Kate and her vet decided they just couldn’t leave it and it had to come out. The mass weighed in at a huge 1 kilogram and no Demi, this does not count towards your weight loss!
To summarize, Demi isn’t a dog that races around with a ball, leaping in and out of rivers or is this weeks flyball champ. What she is, is a girl who loves cuddling Kate’s other little ones. She’s a quiet, plodder of a lady that will never win any races and is just content to live out her remaining years surrounded by peace and love, which is what Kate is providing in abundance.
