HI EVERYONE – LILI HERE
I had long resigned myself to being left in a kennel for the rest of my days. I am 15 years old, full of skin problems, sores and scabs and, not to put too fine a point on it, I stink worse than a dustbin on a hot day! I also have arthritis and can hardly walk. Let’s face it, I won’t come anywhere on anyone’s wish list, when looking for a new four legged companion. So what could I look forward to? Not much I guessed; no-one would want me.
Oh, how wrong could I be. One day I was put in a car with two other frightened dogs and driven, well, a long way. We were all a bit confused and bewildered and scared to be honest. The next thing I knew I was being taken out of the car, leaving my companions behind and put in another car and then had another long car ride. This was even scarier now I was on my own. This time someone sat next to me in the back of the car and cuddled me. Didn’t she notice my scabby skin and the smell? I don’t know if she said anything to me as I am also deaf, but it was so lovely to feel someone there. Finally, after a very long day, I arrived at a house and went into a garden for a much longed for wee! I do find it very hard to walk as my claws had, overtime, become very long and twisted and my arthritis meant that my legs were not very strong and it was very painful to walk. I did my wee and it all got very exciting after that, I was introduced to two new canines, who seemed overjoyed to get to know me, and they made me feel very welcome. After a rest and a light supper I was ready for a well deserved sleep and was taken into a small room, which I now know to be their garden room, where I snuggled down on a big soft, comfy bed for the night. Could this bliss last or would I be moved on tomorrow? I thought it best not to get too friendly, just in case.
The next day came and went and I was still here. Things seemed to be looking up I thought, but I still had this feeling that my new found luck couldn’t last because it hadn’t before, had it? The following day I was put back in the car, my heart felt like it was about to break. I was right, this brief glimpse of happiness wasn’t going to last, this was it, I was off again to who knows where; I would never find a home.
‘Who knows where’ was a trip to the vet to have my claws clipped so I could walk without pain. I was also given tablets to help with the pain of my arthritis, and oh wonder of wonders, yay, I was taken home, yes back to the house with my two new buddies and a cat. Well the less said about the cat the better, sadly it was hate at first sight for both of us (but things are improving on that front). Home. Did I really say home? In two short days that lovely word had come to mean something special to me at last.
Over the next three weeks I had to endure two baths a week which I didn’t really enjoy, but now my skin feels and looks so much better. Gone are the scabs and sores. I now have a nice shiny coat and my hair is growing back. And after three weeks on my lovely comfy bed I have lost the horrible callouses on my bottom and back legs. Best of all I don’t smell like a dustbin anymore! I look forward to my breakfast and supper as now I get freshly cooked chicken and vegetables, all designed with helping my skin and arthritis, and it’s so yummy I eat every scrap!
Over the last three weeks I have become a very happy old lady. I say that, but inside I feel like a puppy and now that I look good, feel good, smell good and can walk so much better I AM a puppy again!
I do so hope that all the other unwanted, unloved dogs out there, of whatever age, will soon find their forever home and can become as happy a puppy dog as I am.
Lots of love Lili xxxx
If you are of a ‘certain age’, or, indeed someone who is young, where you feel that taking on a puppy/kitten, or a young dog/cat, is not really going to work for you, and you have space in your heart or, more importantly, on your sofa, to offer one, or more, oldies the chance a good life in their remaining years, then please get in touch https://lesamisdesanimaux.com/animals/ . Remember, there is no adoption fee for a lifetime foster, and all vets fees, other than annual vaccinations, and parasitical medication, are covered by Les Amis des Animaux.
