“Cats have a way of keeping their feelings hidden, but that doesn’t mean they don’t experience stress, anxiety, grief or uncertainty just as deeply as we do.”
When I sat down with flower essence practitioner Sara Estelle, it quickly became clear that her passion lies not only in flowers, but in helping animals navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease.
Anyone who has shared their home with a cat knows just how sensitive these remarkable creatures can be. A move to a new home, a visit to the vet, the arrival of a new pet, the loss of a companion, or even a change in routine can leave some cats feeling unsettled. While many adapt quickly, others may need a little extra support.
For an increasing number of animal lovers, flower essences have become part of that support.
Flower essences are often misunderstood. They are not herbal medicines, essential oils or veterinary treatments, and they are not intended to diagnose or treat physical conditions.
Instead, they are used to support emotional wellbeing, helping animals feel calmer, more balanced and more secure during times of stress, fear, anxiety or change.
Many people choose them because they are gentle, non-invasive and can be used alongside appropriate veterinary care.
Flower essences may be considered during situations such as:
🌸 Settling into a rescue, foster or new home
🌸 Introducing a new animal companion
🌸 Travelling or veterinary visits
🌸 Recovery following surgery
🌸 Age-related changes
🌸 Bereavement and loss
🌸 End-of-life care and support
Sara’s own journey with flower essences began during a difficult period in her life when she was searching for ways to find emotional balance and resilience. The experience inspired her to train as a flower essence practitioner, and for more than 25 years she has worked with people and animals experiencing periods of grief, transition and emotional upheaval.
Her love of cats has been a constant thread throughout that journey and eventually inspired the creation of Marvin’s Strong Heart Essences, named after one of her much-loved feline companions.
Today, Sara runs the School of Gaia and continues to educate others about flower and vibrational essences, while supporting individuals and animals through one-to-one consultations.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Sara’s work is her belief that animals do not exist in isolation from the people who care for them.
Cats, in particular, can be highly attuned to the emotional atmosphere around them. A household experiencing stress, grief or uncertainty may affect a cat more than we realise.
Equally, caring for an anxious, elderly or unwell animal can be emotionally exhausting for the humans involved.
For this reason, Sara sometimes works with both the animal and the person caring for them, selecting separate essence blends tailored to each individual’s needs. Her approach recognises that supporting the wellbeing of one can often have a positive impact on the other.
No two cats respond to life’s challenges in exactly the same way.
A rescue cat, for example, may be struggling with anxiety, lack confidence in unfamiliar surroundings and find it difficult to trust people. Another may be grieving the loss of a companion, while a third may simply be overwhelmed by change.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, Sara carefully considers each animal’s history, behaviour and circumstances before selecting a combination of essences designed to support their individual emotional needs.
Since settling in Charente-Maritime, close to the estuary, Sara has become interested in the work of Les Amis des Animaux and is keen to support the charity, its foster carers and volunteers.
She is currently planning a fundraising workshop for anyone who would like to learn more about flower essences and their use alongside veterinary care. The workshop will explore how to recognise emotional stress in animals, discuss some of the essences Sara has found most helpful over the years, and look at the unique bond between animals and the people who care for them.
All proceeds from the workshop will go towards supporting the work of Les Amis des Animaux.

Flower essences are intended to provide emotional support and should never replace professional veterinary advice or treatment.
If your cat experiences any sudden, persistent or concerning change in health or behaviour, veterinary advice should always be sought.
After all, emotional wellbeing and physical health go hand in hand — and every cat deserves support for both.
